Let's learn from parents and educators turned edupreneurs - Genevieve Peterson from A One Room Schoolhouse, Bonnie Cooley Ballas from Home Away from Homeschool, and Jennifer Kempin from Failte Waldorf Microschool.
Thanks for coming!
Kerry McDonald has seen the positive effects of unschooling in her own family, and works tirelessly to spread the great work being performed across the country by education entrepreneurs ("edupreneurs").
Kerry is the Velinda Jonson Family Education Fellow at State Policy Network, a senior education fellow at the Foundation for Economic Education, and host of the LiberatED Podcast. She is also the author of "Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated Children outside the Conventional Classroom" and is a regular Forbes contributor.
Bonnie is mom to two children, with a degree in Elementary Education. With co-founder Samantha Lee, Bonnie provides a community center program for homeschoolers in the south hills area of PIttsburgh. She is also a homeschool evaluator.
Together, they provide super-innovative programs such as: "Mad Science"; Storytimes; STEM activities; curriculum sales; vocational opportunity exposure; language clubs, and more!
Find out why they do it, how they do it, and how you can do it for students in your area too!
Leslie's early law career included a school choice case involving private school and homeschooling. From the start, Leslie believed that parents, not the government, were in the best position to choose their child's educational pathway.
Currently vice president of legal affairs at EdChoice, her distinguished career includes extensive state legislative and executive branch experience, a founding board member of one of Indiana's first charter schools, and member of several national councils, institutes, and networks.
Leslie is regularly cited in national publications such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Times, Forces, National Review, The Federalist, and others.
Leslie travels the country, working on legal policy and legislative development, speaking about school choice freedoms publicly (nationally and internationally) whenever possible.
A mother of four and experienced homeschooling parent, Colleen Hroncich is well-versed in school choice.
Formerly a senior fellow and senior policy analyst, she now writes a weekly Friday Feature blog series with CATO CEF about the education space, from innovative schools and exciting educational programs to inspirational stories of students, parents, and teachers.
Colleen's writing has been published by many outlets, including The Hill, The Washington Examiner, Education Post, The Daily Signal, and The Philadelphia Enquirer.
Jennifer taught in the district environment as a special education teacher for 10 years before re-evaluating her vocational path. Burned out and frustrated by the staggering number of students on her roster, she briefly left teaching while raising her then-infant son.
After watching her son's love of learning decrease, she was motivated to homeschool him, witnessing remarkable growth and a return to learning with joy in a very short time period.
Realizing that other children could also benefit, she created Failte Waldorf Microschool, utilizing her extensive skills to provide a safe education space for children in grades 1-5.
Samantha, “Sam,” resides in Bethel Park with her husband and three sons. She has homeschooled for over nine years.
Samantha is the co-founder and managing director of Home Away from Homeschool- a labor of love for the homeschool community, in addition to the Special Events Coordinator for Bethel Park Municipality and the Pittsburgh Market Manager for Libertas Institute, coordinating the Children’s Entrepreneur Markets (made popular by the Tuttle Twins books).
Genevieve always knew she wanted to work with children based on her own high school experience after being diagnosed as "twice exceptional." This propelled Genevieve to become a psychologist, working with children specifically in the educational setting.
Later, as a mom of three (now a mom to four), Genevieve was inspired by "Rethinking School" by Susan Wise Bauer to create a hybrid homeschool program in February of 2020 for her own children.
What started as a few families in her basement classroom has now turned into four locations with 250 children!
Myles and his brother were both diagnosed with a rare eye condition that stunted academic achievement. Knowing that the district system would not be able to provide adequate services, Myles' mother struggled to provide a private education - until it became financially out of reach. But thanks to PA's Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program, Myles was able continue to receive education that fit his needs.
So often, adults are the ones speaking, rather than the children. Hear Myles' perspective as a child navigating the educational process, his look back as an adult, and how he works every day to advocate for other families' educational freedom as a Government Affairs Fellow.
Registration includes: admission to the event general sessions, panel, and Q&A, a lite lunch, and your choice of TWO breakout sessions. Breakout sessions are capped, so be sure to save your spot!
